In-Person Presentation | El Camino del Diablo or The Devil’s Highway

El Camino del Diablo has been used for at least a millennium by Indigenous peoples, and later, conquistadores, miners, immigrants, and modern-day adventurers. This brutal 200-mile route links Sonora, Mexico, to Yuma, Arizona, to the mission areas of California. This talk focuses on the three federal areas the route crosses in southern Arizona. A reputed 400 to 2,000 travelers have lost their lives along this stretch of the Arizona-Sonora border, mostly from heat, exposure, and dehydration. Join Butch Farabee, a retired National Park Service Ranger who has traveled this remote route six times, for a presentation that is part overview, part history, and part travelogue of this fascinating area.
